ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM FUNCTIONAL LITERACY TEST (ALS-FLT)


What?

It is a paper and pencil test.
It has 2 parts (Personal Information Sheet, FLT Proper)


Why?

It tries to measure the learner’s literacy levels in reading, writing and computational skills.


When?

It is administered before the start and at the end of the learning intervention.


How?

The learner is given the Functional Literacy Test, Booklet and the Answer Sheet and expected to:
Work independently
Answer all the test items properly
Avoid staying too long in any particular item
Avoid copying from their seatmates
The learner must first answer the PIS.


Who?
ALS target learners who would like to enroll in ALS programs.





Functional Literacy Test has two parts:

Part 1-   The Personal Information Sheet (PIS)

Part II-  The FLT Proper
                           A. Conduct of Interview (Listening & Speaking/Pakikinig at Pagsasalita )
                           B. Reading/Pagbasa
                           C. Numeracy/Pagkukuwenta
                           D. Writing/Pagsulat




Part 1-The Personal Information Sheet   (PIS)


PIS in itself is a basic literacy test
               
                A. measures the examinee’s/learners ability  to write basic information  about himself/herself (items 1-9)
               
                B. requires the respondent/examinee to write one simple sentence about himself/herself.







Part II A

Listening and Speaking – (6 oral responses)

It is conducted using the interview guide to determine the listening and speaking skills of individual learners

Score of 2 points each in every question







Part II B -  The Reading Test

Reading (items 1-24)

 (13 short response & 11 multiple choice) – measures understanding of written selections


Score Interpretation in Reading

18 – 24  -             Secondary Level
16 – 17  -             Advanced Elementary Level
11 – 15 -              Lower Elementary Level
0   - 10  -              Basic Level


Skills Assessed in Reading

Make inferences to interpret  information that is not directly stated.   (Answer how and why question)

 Match words to locate information when there is distracting information or information that is not next to matched word. (Answer what, where and when)

 Summarize, recognize the main idea, separate details from the main idea

Cause and effect relations – make predictions, draw conclusions, sequence ideas







Part II C -  The Numeracy Test

Numeracy (items 1-24) – gauges  the learner’s ability to count or do simple mathematical operations

Score Interpretation

17 – 24  -              Secondary Level
12 – 16 -              Advanced Elementary Level
6   – 11 -              Lower Elementary Level
0   - 5      -              Basic Level


Skills Assessed in Numeracy

Computation without regrouping 4 operations, mainly 2-digit and some 3-digit

Word problems with regrouping 4 operations, 2 single, 3 combine, 1 with money

Interpret graphs, include bar graphs and pie charts: 2 read information, 2 compare points, 2 interpret information

Measurement, length, time, calendars








Part II D -  The Writing Test

Writing – (2 extended response) gauges the ability to compose sentences and  paragraph

Score Interpretation

6 – 8                       -              Secondary Level
4 – 5                       -              Advanced Elementary Level
2 – 3                       -              Lower Elementary Level
0 - 1                        -              Basic Level


Skills Assessed in Writing

Content:  relevance, logic, coherence
Language:  grammar, sentence structure and variation, punctuation
Words: range of vocabulary and spelling
Values: shows positive values
